Northgate

This is the road from Towngate to Baildon Moor.

Pinfold is off Northgate with what was recently Robinson's Sweet Hut. The toilet block is next to the sweet hut. Then the road to Providence Row and Baildon Moor Garage.

Between the Towngate Rooms and Airedale House is East Parade.

The seat shown in the photo above was a popular meeting place for Baildonians. The long seat (Cartwright's seat) is made from a piece of oak 22ft long that was put under the organ of the old Weslyan Chapel as it was "giving way".^[1]

In 1863 (according to Jones Directory) William Midgeley was the Wheelright and Blacksmith here. He also owned a colliery on Baildon Moor and was a Postmaster. The business was later owned by the Halliday family, Sam Halliday and later Robinson Halliday.^[1]

Demolition of the wheelwright and smithy on Northgate

When this was demolished a large quantity of the equipment (anvils etc.) was first buried in the cellars.^[1]

My uncle Lesley had that demolished to make way for petrol pumps and a workshop where those petrol pump are in the photo. Wonder if that's my uncle strolling across the yard.

Baildon Moor Garage is on the site of the wheelwright shop run by Robinson Halliday. On the very left of the photo of the demolition is the gable end of 38 Northgate, the building shown in the 2013 photo of the garage.

2019 and the garage is still owned by Tonnie Dobby.
